Well, I guess I did this backwards as I read this book first, but I rather think I preferred this viewpoint for its uniqueness. Most time travel is for a modern girl ending up in the past and usually enlightening them as she encounters true love. This book starts immediately with a Regency Miss tossed into 2009 Los Angeles. A lot of research is subtlety displayed giving a look into the consciousness of a Regency Lady. The things that upset her are many and not part of our current culture. Her manner of speech is all that is proper, perplexing her new friends. Can she adapt? And she's virtually switched places, including bodies and identities with this Courtney Stone. So here she is engulfed by Courtney's wreck of a life, her ex fiance, crazy boss, money difficulties, and interfering friends. How can a proper lady survive? Read on and find out.

Great writing, research, characters and idea. Loved it.

Rude Awakenings of a Jane Austen Addict Laurie Viera Rigler 9781616880958 Books Reviews

In Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict, Courtney Stone (a 21st century Angelino) wakes to find herself trapped in the body a young Regency era woman, Jane Mansfield. I gave that book 4 stars, primarily because the ending was not satisfying, but also because I wanted to know what was happening to Jane Mansfield. Now that question is answered in a charming sequel that tells us the mirror story to its predecessor.

Again the story starts as our heroine awakens to find herself in someone else's body, place and time. Jane is suddenly in the life of Courtney, trying to make sense of modern technology and modern relationships. It's not necessary to read the first book first, but it adds to the enjoyment to read both. The book is well written and funny, and the author is terrific at describing things as someone from another time would see them. Quite charming and a fun read!
I won't say much as other reviewers have told you enough about the plot.

As most know this is a sequel to Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict. A story about Courtney Stone from the 21st century, trapped in 1813 in the body of Jane Mansfield. Now we learn about Jane Mansfield in 2009 Los Angeles who wakes up trapped in Courtney Stone's time and body.

As the author did well in the first book, showing us how different regency times were to our day, through Courtney's experiences, she has also done well showing us a poor confused Jane's reaction when seeing a television for the first time, a toilet for the first time, hot and cold running water for the first time, along with all the other first time experiences, such as electricity, computers, the internet, cell phones, cars, airplanes and even drinking a coca-cola.

It is very well written and it kept my interest.

One thing though, as some do not want hints of the occult and fortune tellers in their stories, this is a part of this story. It is a small part, but it is there.
This is the sequel to Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict. In this tale, we see things from the other perspective, where the Regency England girl is thrust into the body of a woman in the 21st century. Jane Mansfield must negotiate with electricity, cell phones, television, and short skirts, not to mention the manners and habits of our time. While it was a bit annoying at first, particularly getting through her initial shock and understanding and dealing with Courtney's friends who for the most part seemed quite vapid, it did eventually settle down to a more even keel and I did start to like Jane. She is particularly delighted with the recording of Pride and Prejudice and enthralled with the Jane Austen books that had not been published during her previous life. Jane must figure out how to sort out Jane's relationships and life and manages to deal quite well with some of Courtney's quandaries. This was not a serious book by any stretch, but was a reasonably fun book overall.
As much as I would prefer to present myself as a credible reviewer, this novel has reduced me to nothing more than a squealing fangirl! As Jane Austen wrote, "How quick come the reasons for approving what we like!" Since reading author Laurie Viera Rigler's "Confessions of A Jane Austen Addict" in 2007, I have been anxiously anticipating this sequel, or rather parallel story as "Confessions..." left me with several burning questions Did Jane and Courtney swap back lives, did they stay or did they go, or were they just the same soul and maybe, just maybe, lifetimes are on a continual loop, of sorts??

IN "Rude Awakenings" Regency era, Miss Jane Mansfield awakens to find herself, not in her own body! And in modern day LA! Although the modern world of computers, cars, airplanes, cell phones, etc etc etc are rather frightening & intimidating at first-- as she acclimates, she finds it all, not only the modern conveniences like electricity and running water, quite liberating! As she learns to maneuver through the mores of modern times, along with her friendships with women and her realtionships with the opposite sex, she decides she must also accept where she is and help improve the lot she has been given. Blessedly, Rigler gifts the reader in "Rude Awakenings" with lovely, and most satisfying closure, indeed. You need not be a Jane Austen addict like myself to enjoy this smart and witty novel-- but I dare say you will become a fan of Laurie Viera Rigler!
As a Jane Austen addict myself I was entranced by all the wisdom expressed by the Austen quotations. Time traveling, both forwards and back, have always been popular, but this romantic version celebrates learning to be present in the now. Mindfulness has been at the forefront of psychological research and is associated with a meaningful life. I needed this message reinforced for me and appreciated this delightful book for reminding me.
